Exploring Rare Goldendoodle Coat Colors: Uncovering the Beauty of Black, Chocolate, and Merle

Updated: Nov 7

So, while Joe is out right at this moment, taking Hoku to her honeymoon with Fox Creek's blaze, I feel inspired to share about the amazing color genetics we will have in this litter! It goes without saying that Goldendoodles have become a beloved choice for dog lovers everywhere, known for their playful spirits and their adorable shaggy, teddy-bear-like hypoallergenic coats. However, many only consider the common red, apricot, golden, and cream colors. And admittedly, that is most of what we produce at Beechwood Goldendoodles. But I got adventurous and decided to delve into exciting more rare colors. So I purchased Hoku in 2022, and her powerhouse of color genetics has been fabulous! In this post, I will dive into three lesser-known Goldendoodle colors: black, chocolate, and merle. And regarding merle, Hoku doesn't carry for that, but I'll let you in on a secret at the end of this blog. At any rate, these shades add not just beauty but also a rich history and unique traits that make them stand out.

The Allure of Black Goldendoodles

Black Goldendoodles are a classic favorite that attracts many dog enthusiasts. I'm seeing an uptick in requests for them. With their lustrous coats and charming personalities, these Doodles make a striking addition to any household. Hoku had her first litter with several black puppies last Christmas, and WOW, was I shocked at how shiny their coats were. It immediately made me think of beautiful, black Asian hair. So, why the extra shine? On a quick internet search, I learned that the black hair reflects light more than any other Goldendoodle color.

I believe one reason for their recent appeal and the uptick in requests is their elegance. Black

Goldendoodles capture attention during walks in the park, and like classic fashion choices, black never goes out of style. This is not to mention it shows less dirt and you won't be seeing black hair on furniture with the no shedding.

In terms of grooming, black Goldendoodles come in various fur textures, from wavy to curly. Want to enhance that shiny black all the more? According to grooming professionals, spending just 30 minutes a week on grooming can greatly enhance the dog’s coat appearance, although we recommend brushing your Goldendoodle several times a week. Not only is it going to bring out that luster, it is a prime time to bond with your Goldendoodle. By the way, my absolute favorite regular maintenance grooming tool is Chris Christensen's T-brush, the longer bristle style. It prevents matts and feels like a massage to your Goldendoodle.

Exploring Chocolate Doodles

So, I'm excited about this honeymoon for Hoku. Her beau, Blaze, is 100% chocolate. And Hoku carries for chocolate. That means, statistically genetically, we will have have chocolates and half blacks and in various patterns of abstract, parti, or solid. I've been developing the chocolate color at Beechwood. Chocolate Goldendoodles have an irresistible charm with their rich, warm colors that evoke feelings of comfort and home.

Typically, these Goldendoodles flaunt a dark brown coat that glimmers in the light, occasionally appearing auburn. This coloration makes them stand out, attracting the attention of families who appreciate a unique aesthetic. Interestingly, chocolate Goldendoodles make up about 25% of the Doodle population, highlighting their popularity.

Moreover, chocolate Goldendoodles can display various shades within their coats, offering a unique twist to their appearance. Some owners report that their chocolate Doodles can change the color of their coats slightly with the seasons, showcasing a beautiful interplay between genetics and environmental factors. I can't wait to see how many chocolate pups we get in Hoku's litter.

The Fascinating Merle Pattern

Now, let's explore one of the most captivating of the trio: the merle pattern. Merle Doodles are known for their stunning color mixes that form an eye-catching marbled look on their coats. Are you wondering what that merle secret is I mentioned at the beginning of the blog? Beechwood Goldendoodles is introducing merle and introducing Bernedoodles! We are purchasing our first Bernedoodle puppies over the next couple of months that will eventually produce tricolor as well as regular and chocolate merle pups. So, stay tuned! That waitlist will open in 2026.

You will often find merle Doodles showcasing shades of gray, blue, and tan, and even chocolate, creating mesmerizing patterns that are truly one-of-a-kind. Each merle Doodle features a unique coat, making them a standout in any crowd. Statistics reveal that merle Doodles represent about 15% of Doodles, signaling their distinct appeal.

Responsible breeding practices are critical when it comes to merle Doodles. The merle gene is dominant, and we never breed a merle to a merle, as concerns can arise from the genetic makeup of double merles. Otherwise, a merle is as healthy as any other Goldendoodle or Bernedoodle.

The Benefits of Unique Goldendoodle Colors

Choosing unique Doodle colors like black, chocolate, and merle comes with numerous perks. For one, a distinctive dog becomes a conversation starter, often leading to new friendships with fellow dog lovers in neighborhoods, at parks or dog shows.

Each unique color also fosters individuality, allowing potential owners to merge their personality preferences with their choice of Goldendoodle. For instance, studies show that pet owners often associate certain colors with specific traits; many link black coats with elegance and chocolate coats with warmth.

Moreover, embracing these unique color options enhances diversity within the Doodle community. Supporting various colors not only enriches the breed but also helps cultivate a sense of community and appreciation for all Doodles, regardless of color.

Final Thoughts

The world of Goldendoodles is vibrant and varied, extending far beyond the commonplace red, apricot, golden and cream hues. Unique colors like black, chocolate, and merle not only bring beauty but also enhance the overall diversity and appeal of the breed.

Whether you're enchanted by the sophistication of a black Goldendoodle, the cozy warmth of a chocolate companion, or the playful presence of a merle, each color comes with its own distinct personality.

If you're contemplating welcoming a Beechwood Goldendoodle into your life, consider embracing one of these unique colors. You might just find the perfect furry friend in an unexpected shade!

Celebrating the diverse colors of Goldendoodles invites us all to appreciate the individuality, beauty, and joy that our furry companions bring into our lives.
